(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – Lake Erie Director of Athletics Kelley Kish has announced the promotion of Mackenzie Perttu as the head coach of the women's basketball team. Perttu recently served as the top assistant coach for the Storm after serving in a similar capacity at Michigan Tech.
"In Kenzie we have it all: an extraordinary DII playing career and high-level basketball IQ, top assistant coach experience in our region and the personalized approach and care that means so much to our current team and top recruiting class," said Director Kish. "We are excited to maintain the positive momentum and culture within our women's basketball program. The future is bright for Storm Women's Basketball under Kenzie's leadership."
"I am excited and honored to have been given this opportunity by Kelley Kish, Billie Dunn, and President Posler to continue my coaching career and to serve in this new role here at Lake Erie," Perttu said. "I'm looking forward to continue working with this special group of players and to keep the program moving in the right direction."
Perttu was also a star player at Michigan Tech where she received multiple All-GLIAC and GLIAC All-Academic honors. Her highest honor was being a first team selection.
Under her leadership the Huskies made the postseason all four years, won the GLIAC Tournament championship in 2015, and made two NCAA regional appearances. She led the team in scoring with 15.4 points per game her sophomore season.
As an assistant coach, Michigan Tech qualified once again to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament.
"Lake Erie College is a special place. Kenzie has blossomed as our assistant coach and knows just what we are building in only our second year in the G-MAC," continued Kish. "This is a win for our program and for the campus to land Kenzie as our head coach. She will capitalize on already understanding all Lake Erie College has to offer as the leader of women's basketball."
She graduated with a Master of Science in kinesiology and a Bachelor of Science with a major in psychology from Michigan Technological University.
Perttu will start a national search to fill her coaching staff immediately.
