PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team fell in a tough battle with the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets on Thursday (Jan. 25) night at the Osborne Center. The Storm fell 71-60.
The teams exchanged the first four baskets of the game before Farrah Benner drained a three pointer that gave the Storm a 7-4 lead prior to the media timeout. After Cedarville made a layup, Lake Erie went on a 12-0 run that spanned the final four and a half minutes of the quarter. The Storm got seven points on the run from Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) as Lake Erie led 19-6 after one quarter.
Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) pushed the Storm advantage to 25-12 with 7:43 left in the second quarter. Cedarville followed with a 10-0 run that was halted by a three pointer from Megyn Christensen. Christensen's three made it 28-22 with 2:15 left in the first half. The teams traded three pointers as Lake Erie took a 31-28 lead to the locker room.
Cedarville opened the second half with four straight points, taking a 32-31 lead two minutes in. Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) put the Storm up 33-32 with a jumper less than a minute later. Benner tied the contest at 35 before Cedarville rallied off five straight points. Trailing by five, Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) converted a three point play at the media timeout. The Yellow Jackets gained some distance and led 51-42 after the third quarter.
Cedarville pushed the lead to double digits in the fourth quarter but the Storm attempted to rally to stay in the game. With 6:08 left, Chaddock made a layup and corresponding and-in that pulled the Storm within seven at 58-51. Gabor added a three point play with 3:30 left and Benner made her fourth three pointer of the game as the Storm cut the deficit to six. Cedarville ended the game with the final five points and won 71-60.
Chaddock and Gabor each scored a team-high 16 points for the Storm. Gabor added seven rebounds and two steals on the night. Benner made four three pointers for 14 points, along with a career-high eight rebounds and five assists. West tied a career-high with ten rebounds (four offensive) while Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) pulled down nine boards and had six blocks for the Storm.
Lake Erie will host Ursuline on Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon at 2:00 PM.
