PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team snapped a three game losing streak with a 75-59 victory over the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers on Monday (Jan. 15) night at the Osborne Center.
"Tonight was a hard fought win for us as we were able to overcome adversity," said Storm head coach Bob Booher. "Tonight was a step in the right direction to battling back after our last few games."
Lake Erie opened the game with two straight layups from Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) and Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian), taking a 4-0 lead. The Battlers tied the game at four shortly after. The teams went back and forth over the next two minutes in a defensive battle. With the game tied at six, Lake Erie gained a 9-6 lead off of a jumper from Megyn Christensen (Swanton, Ohio / Swanton). Alderson Broaddus responded with a 5-0 run to take an 11-9 lead with 3:18 left in the first quarter. West tied the game at 11 with two free throws at the two minute mark. Following the free throws, Lake Erie closed the quarter on a 6-1 run with Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) scoring four points. Lake Erie led 17-12 after the first quarter.
West opened the second quarter with a layup one minute in, as the Storm led 19-12. After a Battlers layup, three different players combined on a Lake Erie 8-2 run over a three minute span. Gabor scored four points on the run as Lake Erie led by 13, 29-16 with 5:33 to go in the second quarter. West scored four of the final five points for the Storm in the half. Lake Erie led 34-26 at the half.
The teams went back and forth in the opening minute of the third quarter with baskets. After Alderson Broaddus trimmed the lead to six, Lake Erie went on an 11-4 run with four different players scoring. Lake Erie held a 47-34 lead with 6:20 remaining in the third quarter. The Battlers battled back to a seven point deficit with a 10-4 run over the next five minutes. Lake Erie scored the final three points of the frame, leading 54-44.
Chaddock and Christensen combined for the first five points of the fourth quarter, expanding the lead to 59-44. After Alderson Broaddus made a jumper with seven minutes left, Lake Erie went on another 5-0 run. A Gabor layup pushed the advantage to 66-48 with 4:43 left. The Battlers pulled within 13 a minute later but the Storm used a third 5-0 run to seal the victory. Lake Erie won by a final score of 75-59.
Gabor led the Storm with 17 points while she also added seven rebounds, and three steals. West finished with a career-high 16 points, set in the first half. She also completed her first double-double as she pulled down ten rebounds. Chaddock added 12 points and four steals. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds with three blocks.
Lake Erie will host Bluefield State on Wednesday (Jan. 17) at 5:00 PM.
