HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team fell in the final road game of the 2016-17 season on Thursday (Feb. 16) night. The Storm was defeated by the Hillsdale College Chargers 88-68.
Hillsdale opened the game with a 9-2 run over the first two minutes. Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) scored a layup and Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made two free throws as the Storm cut the lead to 9-6. Hillsdale pushed the lead to 11 twice in the quarter but Jones and Gabor answered with a three pointer each time. When Gabor made her three with 3:57 left in the first, Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) followed with a layup. Lake Erie cut the lead to 22-16. Hillsdale ended the quarter with a 27-18 lead.
Lake Erie opened the second quarter with an 11-0 run to take a lead. Four different players scored as the Storm took a 29-27 lead. Jones made two free throws, and Gabor hit a jumper. Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) scored two straight baskets, cutting the lead to one. Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) made a three pointer with 7:34 left in the half as the Storm took the lead. After Hillsdale tied the game, Lake Erie went on another run, an 8-0 run. The Storm got four points from Jones and free throws from Chaddock and Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). Lake Erie led 37-29 with three minutes left. Hillsdale responded with eight straight points, tying the game at 37. Chaddock ended the half with a jumper as Lake Erie led 39-37 at the break.
Gabor and Jones each scored 11 points in the first half.
After two ties at the outset of the third quarter, Hillsdale went on an 11-2 run, forcing a Lake Erie timeout. The Chargers opened the lead to nine at 52-43. Gabor came out of the timeout with a three pointer, slimming the lead to six. Hillsdale came back with a run that pushed the lead to 16 with one minute left in the quarter. Burdo stopped the run with a jumper just before the buzzer. Hillsdale led 68-54 after three quarters.
The Storm answered Hillsdale with each basket as they kept the lead still. The Chargers led by as much as 17 before the Storm cut the lead down. Burdo made her second three of the night as they Storm trailed 73-60 with seven minutes left. The lead grew to 19 before Dawson and Chaddock made two straight baskets. Hillsdale closed out the game with an 88-68 victory.
Gabor led the Storm with 18 points. Jones and Chaddock each added 12 points. Dawson scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds. Burdo put eight points in the scorebook.
The Storm shot 38% from the floor and 86% from the free throw line in the game.
Lake Erie will host Ohio Dominican next Thursday (Feb. 23) for Senior Night.
