PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team could not repeat an early season victory against the Walsh Cavaliers. The Cavaliers won the rematch 73-62 on Saturday (Feb. 4) afternoon.
Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) opened the game with a basket and Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) followed with a free throw. Walsh answered with a three pointer. The teams exchanged baskets as they tied 7-7 three minutes in. Walsh went on an 8-3 run, opening a 15-10 lead. Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) made a layup that pulled the Storm within three. The Cavaliers pushed the lead to nine but Lake Erie slimmed the lead to six by the end of the quarter. After one quarter, Walsh led 22-16.
A 5-2 Walsh run at the beginning of the second quarter opened a 27-18 lead for the Cavaliers. A 7-0 run by Dawson and Gabor cut the lead to 27-25 with seven minutes left in the half. Walsh scored seven straight points before the Storm closed the half with four straight points. Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) made two free throws and Jordan Joseph (Solon, Ohio / Solon) made a jumper at the buzzer. Walsh led 39-29 at the intermission.
Gabor scored ten points in the first half while Dawson scored six and grabbed five rebounds.
Dawson scored six points as the Storm attempted to pull closer to the Cavaliers. A three pointer by Gabor cut the lead to six, with 6:26 left in the third. Lake Erie continued to cut into the lead with four straight free throws from Gabor and Jones. As the Storm trailed 48-43, the Cavaliers answered with an 8-2 run. Lake Erie trailed 56-45 going into the fourth quarter.
Walsh opened the fourth quarter with a layup and two free throws. Jones added four straight free throws for the Storm, cutting the lead to 63-49. With 6:00 left, Lake Erie went on a 13-4 run to end the game. Walsh defeated the Storm 73-62.
Gabor led the team with 22 points, including three three pointers. Dawson finished with her second-straight double-double. Dawson scored 14 points and grabbed ten rebounds. Jones made ten-of-12 free throws for ten points.
The Storm will return to action at #1 Ashland next Thursday (Feb. 9).
