Early Oilers Run Drops Storm

FINDLAY, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team fell behind on an early run by the Findlay Oilers on Saturday (Jan. 21) as the Storm fell 84-56.

Findlay scored the first basket of the game before the Storm scored on back-to-back jumpers by Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) and Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). The Storm took their biggest lead of the game at 7-4 after Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) knocked down a three pointer. Findlay answered with a 9-0 run that gave the Oilers a 13-7 lead. Dawson made two free throws and Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) made a three pointer as the Storm closed the gap to 13-12. Findlay closed the quarter on a 12-0 run to hold a 25-12 lead after one quarter.

Findlay opened the second quarter with a 14-3 run that spanned the first seven minutes. Shagovac and Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) combined to make five free throws in the final three minutes of the half as Findlay led 46-22 at halftime.

Gabor led the  Storm with seven points at the half while Shagovac added six points off the bench.

The Oilers scored the first five points of the second half before Shagovac and Daija Jones combined to score the next 13 points for Lake Erie. Following a four point play for the Oilers, Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) followed with a jumper that closed the scoring in the third quarter at 67-39.

The Oilers added a 7-0 run that spanned the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) hit two free throws to stop the run. Burdo and Brenda Johnson (Bellefontaine, Ohio / Bellefontaine) combined to score the final 15 points for the Storm in the game. Burdo scored eight while Johnson scored seven. The Oilers won by a final score of 84-56.

Shagovac tied a career-high in points with 14 in the game. Shagovac made two threes and four free throws along with three offensive rebounds. Burdo added ten points, including a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line. Gabor finished with just shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Storm will return to the Osborne Center for their only game next week, a matchup with the Hillsdale College Chargers on Thursday (Jan. 26).
