PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team opened the 2017 portion of the schedule with a GLIAC win over the Ferris State University Bulldogs 79-63 on Thursday (Jan. 5) night at the Osborne Center.
Junior Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored a career-high 33 points as the Storm improved to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the GLIAC.
The Storm opened the first two minutes with a 7-2 run, which Gabor scored five of the first seven points. Over the next three minutes, Ferris State took the 12-11 lead with a 10-4 run. Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) scored four points as Lake Erie scored eight straight points. With a 20-12 Lake Erie lead, Ferris State ended the quarter with four straight points. The Storm led 20-16 after one quarter.
Ferris State carried over the momentum from the first quarter as they tied the game with another four straight points. With 3:58 left in the half, Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) nailed a three pointer that gave the Storm a 29-24 lead. The Bulldogs answered with a 9-3 run, taking a 33-32 lead into the locker room.
Gabor led the Storm with 12 points in the first half as the Storm shot 42% from the floor.
Lake Erie was trailing 39-37 in the third quarter before the Storm answered with an 11-2 run into the media timeout. Gabor and Shagovac combined for nine of the 11 points on the run as Lake Erie took a seven point lead. Gabor opened the lead to 13 as she scored eight straight points in the third. The Storm led 59-49 after three quarters.
Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) opened the fourth quarter with two straight baskets as the lead grew to 16. With 3:41 left in the game, Shagovac hit a layup that put the Storm up 20. Ferris State cut the lead to 13 but Brenda Johnson (Bellefontaine, Ohio / Bellefontaine) hit a three pointer just before the buzzer. Lake Erie defeated the Bulldogs 79-63.
Gabor had 33 points on 12-of-21 shooting, with five three pointers. Gabor also grabbed seven rebounds. Shagovac set a career-high with 14 points along with three assists. Chaddock added ten points for the Storm.
Lake Erie will return to the court on Saturday as they host the Grand Valley State Lakers at 1:00 PM.
