SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team used career nights from three different players to snap a six game losing streak on the road on Thursday (Dec. 15).
Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored a career-high 30 points as the Storm won their first GLIAC game with an 81-62 win over the Lake Superior State Lakers. Lake Erie improved to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the GLIAC.
Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) opened the game with a jumper. The Lakers answered with a 6-0 run over the next four minutes. Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) started a Storm 7-0 run with a three ball. Gabor scored the next four points as the Storm led 9-6. Lake Superior State tied the game with a three pointer but Gabor scored the next eight points. Lake Erie led 17-12 after one quarter.
Lake Superior State cut the lead to one at 20-19 in the second quarter. Lake Erie responded with a 7-0 run, taking a 27-19 lead with 6:00 left. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), Chaddock and Gabor all had points for the Storm on the run. Gabor used her third three pointer of the half, pushing the lead to nine. The Lakers added a basket in the final minute of the half, as the Storm led 32-26 at halftime.
Gabor scored 18 points in the first half, including 12 in the first quarter. Lake Erie shot 36% (12-33) in the first half.
The Storm opened the second half with a 15-4 run that pushed the lead to 17 points six minutes into the half. Four different players added points on the run, including a key three pointer from Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne). Burdo added two more three pointers in the quarter, as the Storm tried to put distance between them and the Lakers. Lake State closed the lead to 11 but the Storm closed the quarter on an 11-4 run. Lake Erie led by 18, 61-43 after three frames.
Dawson started a 9-2 run for the Storm as she made a basket at the outset of the fourth. Gabor scored five points on the run as the lead expanded to 25. With 6:27 left, Dawson converted a three point play. The free throw put the Storm up 26. Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) made two threes off of the bench in the fourth. Lake Superior State closed the game on a 9-0 run but the deficit was too much for the Lakers. Lake Erie started the road trip with an 81-62 win.
Gabor ended with 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Gabor nailed five-of-eight three pointers and five-of-six free throws. Gabor also set a career-high with eight assists. Dawson scored 15 points with six rebounds. Chaddock added 12 points with six made field goals.
Burdo set a career-high with 11 points, including nine from long distance. Benner added two from beyond the arc as she scored a career-high six.
Lake Erie finished with a 49% shooting percentage, as well as 50% from three point land. The Storm set a season-high with 12 made threes.
Defensively, the Storm forced 27 turnovers from the Lakers.
The Storm will remain in Michigan as they will play at Northwood on Saturday (Dec. 17).
