Storm Falls to Senators in Double OT, 81-74

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- After two close games on Friday (Nov. 11), the GLIAC/GMAC Challenge came to a close on Saturday (Nov. 12) with a thrilling, double overtime game between the Lake Erie College Storm women's basketball team and the Davis & Elkins College Senators.

Davis and Elkins (2-0) pulled away late in the second overtime for an 81-74 win over Lake Erie (1-1).

Both teams went back and forth in the first four minutes of the game as the score was tied 9-9 at the first media timeout. The Senators closed the first quarter on a 14-2 run as they led 23-11 after the first period.

The Storm was held at bay in the second quarter as the Senators kept up the pressure. Davis and Elkins kept the lead above ten points, leading by as much as 17 at one point. The Storm trailed 37-25 at halftime.

With four minutes left in the third quarter, Davis & Elkins led 53-43 off of a three pointer by Sydney Turner. Lake Erie charged back with an 11-0 run, to regain the lead 54-53 on a layup by Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) had five points in the run. In the final 50 seconds of the quarter, the Senators ended on a 5-0 run to lead 58-54 at the third quarter break. Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) had 12 of her 22 points in the third quarter.

Lake Erie got three early layups in the 4th quarter as a part of a 6-0 run to tie the game at 60. Shagovac had a steal and a layup with 3:35 left in the game, that gave the Storm a 64-62 lead. With the Storm up three, the Senators' Stephanie Wooten nailed a three from the top of the key with 16 seconds left, sending the game to overtime at 65-65.

With 1:47 left in overtime, Dawson converted a layup off of an offensive rebound from Shagovac for a 69-68 lead. Wooten knocked down another three for Davis & Elkins with 22 seconds left. With the Storm down 71-69, Dawson struck again with a layup with six seconds left. The game went into double overtime tied at 71.

Gabor nailed a three at the 3:35 mark that tied the game at 74 all. From that point on, the Senators ended the game on a 7-0 run that dropped the Storm to 1-1, 81-74.

For the game, the Storm shot 40% (31-77).

Gabor led the Storm with 22 points and eight rebounds. Dawson finished the game with 17 points and seven boards as she was seven-for-11 from the floor. Shagovac added 11 points and Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) set a career-high with nine points.

Lake Erie will return to the court on Friday (Nov. 18) as they will take on Saint Joseph as a part of the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament.
