Late Surge Lifts Pioneers Over Storm

CANTON, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today by Malone University, 61-57.   

The Storm opened the game on a 5-0 run, as Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley) hit a three pointer to open the scoring.  The Pioneers answered with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game, and the run was ended by a Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) jump shot to give the Storm a 7-5 advantage.  The Storm ended the quarter on an 8-2 run that was capped by a three pointer from Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) and the Storm entered the second quarter ahead, 16-14.

The second quarter started as a back and forth battle with the Pioneers leading, 25-23 at the media timeout.  Late in the second quarter the Storm went on a 7-0 run that was led by Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) as she had a layup, block, and two rebounds.  The Pioneers hit a last second three and entered the intermission ahead, 31-30.  The Storm was led by Carpenter as she had eight points on 2-3 shooting from behind the arc.

The Storm opened the third quarter quickly, as they opened on a 10-2 run that was highlighted by a pair of Kaeding Skelton (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) layups, to give the Storm a 40-34 advantage.  The Storm stretched their lead to 10 points and entered the fourth quarter ahead, 49-39.   

The Pioneers went on a big run in the fourth and took the lead before Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton) hit a three to end the run and tie the game at 57 points apiece. The Pioneers hit a three with less than a minute remaining and took a 60-57 advantage.  The Pioneers held on to win the game, 61-57.   

The Storm was led by a trio of players, Carpenter, Dawson, and Gabor each had 12 points in the game.  Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) gave the Storm a spark off the bench as she had five points and eight rebounds in the game.

Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (February 6th) when they host Walsh University at 1 P.M.
