PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was victorious today over Malone University, 52-46. With the win the Storm is 5-10 overall and 2-7 in the conference, and with the loss the Pioneers fall to 5-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play.
The Storm opened the game on a 6-2 run that was highlighted by a Kaeding Skelton (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) layup and a Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton) jumper. The Storm continued to play well and led the Pioneers at the media timeout, 11-9. Both teams battled for the remainder of the quarter, and the Storm entered the second tied with the Pioneers at 14 points apiece.
The Storm maintained their lead behind the three point shooting of Narducci, and led 25-21 at the media timeout. Both teams traded baskets, but the Pioneers made a last second basket to take a 26-25 advantage at the intermission. At the half the Storm was led by Narducci as she had 11 points, on 3-6 shooting from behind the arc.
The Pioneers opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run, and took a 37-27 advantage. The run was ended when the Storm took a timeout to halt the Pioneers momentum. After the timeout the Storm cut into the lead with a 5-1 run that was highlighted by a Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) layup. The Storm continued to fight, but entered the fourth quarter trailing, 41-32.
The Storm scored the first two baskets of the quarter and cut the lead to 41-36, when Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) hit a layup off of an assist by Narducci. The Storm cut the lead to three, 41-38, when Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley) hit a baseline jumper. The Storm regained their lead when Skelton made a layup to take a 43-42 lead with 4:24 remaining in the game. The game remained close and the Storm led 47-46 as the Storm took a timeout. Sketlon put the game out of reach as she hit a clutch foul shot to give the Storm a 50-46 edge. The Storm held on to defeat the Pioneers, 52-46.
The Storm was led by Narducci as she had 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Gabor added 10 points and eight boards. Dawson pitched in with nine points, nine rebounds, and a career high four steals.
Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (January 16th) when they travel to take on Walsh University at 1 P.M.
