Storm Defeated by Northwood

MIDLAND, MICH. – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today by Northwood University, 87-60.  With the loss the Storm falls to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the conference and with the win the Timberwolves improve to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.  

The first quarter started as a defensive battle in which the Timberwolves led 3-2 at the media timeout.  Neither team was able to pull away, as the Storm and Timberwolves traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter.  The game was dead locked at 18 points apiece at the end of the first quarter.  Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) led the Storm in the quarter as she was a perfect 4-4 from the foul line.     

Early in the second quarter the Timberwolves went on a 12-0 run and took a 33-19 advantage.  The run was ended when Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) hit a three pointer off of an assist by Kallie Allen (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville).  Northwood continued to play well and stretched their lead to 48-24 at the half.  At the half the Storm was led by Burdo and Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) as each had six points in the half.    

The Timberwolves continued to ride their first half momentum and took a 62-30 led, to force a Storm timeout.  The Storm went on an 8-2 run after the timeout and cut the lead to 64-38.  The run was highlighted by a layup and foul shot by Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley).  The Storm continued to battle and entered the fourth quarter trailing 72-44.   

Early in the fourth quarter the Storm went on a 9-0 run and cut the Northwood lead to, 75-53.  The run was highlighted by a pair of made jump shots by Gabor.  The Storm continued to fight for the remainder of the game, but were defeated by Northwood, 87-60 

Gabor led the way for the Storm with 23 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Carpenter led the defensive with two steals in the game. 

Lake Erie will be back in action Thursday (January 7th) when they return home to host Michigan Tech. at 5:30 P.M.
