KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today by division-I Western Michigan, 72-42.
The Storm started the game on a 6-0 run, with Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley) scoring four of the first six points. The Broncos ended the first quarter on an 11-3 run and took a 14-12 lead heading into the second quarter. The second quarter started with a Western Michigan 6-0 run that stretched the lead to 20-12, before a Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) foul shot halted the run. The Broncos continued to pull away and took a 50-31 lead into the half.
The Storm was outscored in the second half 22-11, and Western Michigan held on to win the game 72-42.
The Storm was led by Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) who had a team high 13 points, and also had a steal. Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) also pitched in with six points and a team high six rebounds. Defensively, Dawson protected the rim with two blocks in the game for the Storm.
Lake Erie will open the regular season on Saturday (November 14th) when they host Salem International at 8 P.M.
