ASHLAND, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated by Ashland today (February 2nd), 76-43. With the loss the Storm falls to 8-13 overall and 3-12 in conference play, and with the win the Eagles improve to 15-6 overall and 11-4 in conference play.
Kaeding Skelton (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven) opened the scoring for the Storm on a layup off of an assist by Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) on their third possession of the game, to tie the game at 2-2. After that bucket the Eagles went on an 8-0 run that was ended when Shelby Carpenter (Dayton, Ohio / Miami Valley) hit a three pointer off of an assist from Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton) to make the score, 12-5 in favor of Ashland. The Eagles stretched their lead as they went on a 9-0 run that was ended when Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) hit a pair of foul shots to make the lead, 21-7. The Storm answered with a 6-0 run that cut the lead to 13, 28-15. The run was highlighted by a three pointer by Carlye Garst (Salem, Va. / Salem) off of an assist by Narducci. Ashland closed the half on an 11-0 run that gave them a 41-18 advantage at the intermission.
The second half opened with both teams trading baskets through the first 10 minutes of the half with Ashland leading, 58-32. The Eagles maintained their lead to seal the win, 76-43.
The Storm was led by Shagovac who had a season high 10 points, and two steals off the bench of the Storm. Also contributing off of the bench for Lake Erie was Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) who grabbed 11 rebounds, which set a career high for Dawson. Carpenter had four steals and four rebounds in the game.
Lake Erie will be back in action on Thursday (February 5th) when they host Malone University at 5:30 P.M.
