PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team opened the season today (Novermber 15th) with an 83-48 victory over Salem International.
After trading buckets in the first two minutes of the game the Storm went on a 14-2 run that covered five minutes of the first half to give the Storm a 19-7 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the half. At the 10:52 mark in the first half junior guard Shelby Carpenter (Dayton, Ohio / Miami Valley) hit a three that started a 15-2 for Lake Erie, and gave the Storm a 38-15 advantage with 2:24 to play in the first half.
At the half the Storm had a 40-19 lead. The largest lead of the night for the Storm came with two minutes remaining in the game when sophomore guard Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) hit a three to make the score 82-43, and the Storm won the game by a final of 83-48.
Leading the way for the Storm offensively was a pair of freshman guard Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) and center Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) who each had 16 points. Dawson also led the Storm in rebounds with nine in the game.
The Storm forced Salem International into turning the ball over 30 times, and Lake Erie had 18 steals in the game.
The Storm will be back in action tomorrow (November 16th) when they host Central St. at 3:30 P.M. in their final game of the GLIAC-GMAC challenge
