Nielsen Wins Great Midwest Title on Day One of Championships

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Lake Erie College track and field team was in action today as they competed in day one of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships. 

Head Coach Giles Davis said, "Overall we had a solid effort by the entire team, which included a conference champion in the pentathlon and a runner up in the long jump.  We are excited and are looking forward for more great efforts tomorrow."

The Storm women were led by Hailey Nielsen (Jonesville, Mich. / Jonesville) as she won the pentathlon recording a total of 2,991 points.  Nielsen won both the 800 meters, and the long jump to seal her conference championship in the pentathlon.  Johanna Moeller (Bochum, Germany / Schiller-Schule Gymnasium Furjungen Und Madchen) added a second place finish in the long jump as she cleared a distance of 5.38 meters or 17 feet eight inches.  Moeller also qualified for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles, which will take place tomorrow.  Luca Hartman (Bonnievale, South Africa / Hcei Meisieskod Bloemhof) qualified for the 60 meter dash finals as she ran a time of 7.95 seconds.    

The men were led by the distance medley team of Brandon Bryan (Geneva, Ohio / Geneva), Joe Pearce (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon), Xavier Kibet (Nakuru, Kenya / Baringo), and Logan Ebersole (Chesterville, Ohio / Highland) as they earned seventh place honors with a time of 10:57.81 minutes.  Joseph Elson (Mount Gilead, Ohio / Mount Gilead) qualified for the finals in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.83 seconds, the finals will take place tomorrow.  Elson also qualified for the finals in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.73 seconds, and the finals will be run tomorrow.  Montrell Devaughn (Canton, Ohio / Canton McKinely) will be joining Elson in the 400 meter finals, as he qualified with a time of 51.16 seconds.  Konnell Woods (Addison, Texas / Greenhill School) qualified for the finals of the 60 meter hurdles, with a time of 8.68 seconds.  The finals of the 60 meter hurdles will be run tomorrow. 

Lake Erie will return to the track tomorrow (Feb. 24) when they wrap up competition at the Great Midwest Championships.
