HARPERSFIELD, OHIO – Sophomore Joe Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) cleared the 50' mark and set one of six school records for the Lake Erie College track and field teams at the Division II Team Challenge hosted by SPIRE Institute Saturday (Feb. 2).
As a team, the Storm men finished fourth of 21 squads while the women's team took seventh place out of 23 teams. The event was the team's only "home" meet of the season at SPIRE Institute.
Postwaite won the triple jump by covering 50' 1 ¾" in his sixth and final attempt of the day, breaking the 50' barrier for the first time and posting the fifth best jump this season in NCAA Division II. His mark was also one of five NCAA Championship provisional qualifiers on the day for the Storm.
Four of the school records were set on the women's side. Freshman Alicia Arnold (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain) broke an LEC mark by winning the 200-meter dash in 24.73 seconds, provisionally qualifying for the national meet with a time that puts her in the top 15 nationally.
The women's 800-meter record was broken twice in a matter of minutes. Senior Sammie Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) did so with a time of 2:21.96, but that didn't last long before junior Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) topped that in the next heat with a time of 2:19.53, placing her sixth in the event.
The trio of Arnold, Smith and Fluker combined with senior Leah Jones (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) to run a school-record time of 3:58.13 in the 4x400-meter relay, crushing the previous school mark by over five seconds.
The other school record came in the high jump where sophomore Destiny Prusky (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) tied her own mark at 5' 5 ¼".
Arnold also placed fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.83 seconds and sophomore Ariana Jorgensen (Kleinburg, Ontario / Emily Carr Secondary) took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.03 seconds.
Redshirt freshman Sean Stone (Newton Falls, Ohio/Ravenna Southeast) set a school record in the men's weight throw with a toss of 53' 8 ½", which was good for fourth place in the event.
The men had a pair of provisional qualifying times in the 400-meters. Freshman Keith Hemphill (Warrensville Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) won the event in 48.87 seconds and redshirt junior Ethan Snyder (Salesville, Ohio/Buckeye Trail) was third in 49.10 seconds.
The pair teamed with senior Joe Lockard (Columbus, Ohio/Circleville) and freshman Anfernee LaRue (Orange, N.J./Orange) for a third-place finish and an NCAA provisional time of 3:18.18 in the 4x400-meter relay.
Hemphill also finished eighth in the 200 meters (22.32 seconds) while Snyder posted an eighth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.53). Senior Garrett Ondrus (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) was sixth in the hurdles with a time of 8.48 seconds.
In the 60-meter dash, redshirt freshman Jarrod Edwards (Riverview, Fla./Riverview) took third place with a time of 6.99 seconds while freshman Jacob DiCello (East Palestine, Ohio/East Palestine) was 10th in 7.18 seconds.
The men's other point scorer was senior Nathan Fox (Franklin, Ohio/bishop Hartley) who was seventh in the heptathlon with 3,651 points.
The Storm are back in action next weekend at the Cornell University Invitational Saturday, Feb. 9.
