ALLENDALE, MICH. – Freshman Joe Postwaite (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) won his second individual title and scored in his third event Friday (May 4) during the final day of competition at the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Grand Valley State University.
Postwaite, who earlier won the long jump and placed seventh in the high jump, bested the field of 16 competitors to win the triple jump and was named "Freshman Field Athlete of the Year" at the meet. Postwaite jumped 48' 10" on his second attempt, two inches past the next best jump.
It's the second time a Storm student-athlete has been named "Field Athlete of the Year" at the GLIAC Championships and the third time overall Lake Erie has claimed an Athlete of the Year honor at the conference meet.
Postwaite finished the competition with 22 total points individually. As a team, the Lake Erie College men scored 40.5 points and finished seventh of 12 teams at the event. The Storm women finished 12th.
In addition to Postwaite, two other Storm men scored points on Friday afternoon. Junior Garrett Ondrus (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) ran a school-record time of 14.96 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and placed eighth while junior Eric Klucar (Medina, Ohio/Highland) tied for sixth in the pole vault (14' 11").
On the women's side, the only Storm individual to score points was freshman Destiny Prusky (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) who tied for eighth in the high jump. The 4x100-meter relay team also placed eighth.
