PAINESVILLE, OHIO – While four members of the squad are in the dessert competing at the national indoor championship meet, a majority of the Lake Erie College track and field teams opened the outdoor track and field season on the beach Friday (March 11) at the Coastal Carolina University Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Two men's relay teams highlighted the opening day of outdoor competition, as the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle relay squad placed first and the 4x200-meter relay team finished second.
The hurdle relay team of sophomore All-American Ethan Snyder (Salesville, Ohio/Buckeye Trail) and classmates Garrett Ondrus (Oregon, Ohio/Clay), Nathan Fox (Groveport, Ohio/Bishop Harley) and Quinton Harley (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) posted a time of 1:01.58 which was a full second faster than runner-up Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
The 4x200 squad of junior Joe Lockard (Columbus, Ohio/Circleville), sophomore Cameron Whitner (Westerville, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and freshmen Jason Whitner (Westerville, Ohio/Big Walnut) and Grant Isdale (Flakirk, Scotland/Madison [Ohio]) crossed the finish line ahead of nine other teams in a time of 1:28.99.
Sophomore distance runner Cody Lancaster (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) set a school record in the 3,000-meter run, running a sub-9:00 race for the first time. He finished seventh in the event with a time of 8:52.69.
Another school record was set by the women's 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwest), sophomores Leah Jones (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) and Samantha Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and junior Allison Wright (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) with a time of 9:57.83.
The Storm continues action on Saturday, March 12, with day two of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
