CANTON, Ohio- The Lake Erie College softball team split with the Malone University Pioneers today with final scores of 6-5, and a 14-10 win. With the split, the Storm's overall record increases to 5-7 with a G-MAC record of 1-1.
Peyton Brownlee led off the game with a single through the right side. A sacrifice bunt by Chloe Allen moved Brownlee to second base, and allowed her to score on a double hit to center field by Taylor Phillips. Phillips advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a single hit by Kaitlin Peacock to put the Storm up 2-0.
Malone's leadoff hitter hit a solo home run to start the game offensively for the Pioneers in the bottom of the first. An inning later, the tied the game up at 2 on an RBI single to center field.
In the top of the third, Taylor Phillips walked, and a long single hit to center field by freshman Rachel Ward was able to score Phillips for the go-ahead run. The lead didn't last long, because the Pioneers came back and scored two runs on four hits with the help of one error committed by the Storm defense.
Taylor Phillips reached first base on a fielder's choice in the top of the fifth inning, and a home run by Ward put the Storm up by one. However, in the bottom of the seventh, Malone won with back-to-back RBI singles in walk-off fashion with a final score of 6-5.
Allyson Deemer started in the circle for the Storm in the first game, and had four strikeouts in 6.2 innings pitched. The senior's record is now 2-4.
Malone struck first, scoring on a solo home run in the bottom of the first, going up 1-0 over the Storm.
The second inning was the big one for the Storm offense. Rachel Ward led off with a double to left, followed by a walk by Kaitlin Peacock. Back-to-back fielder's choices resulted in the first out of the inning, but also led the Storm with bases loaded. A single by Allyssa Johnson scored Peacock, leaving the bases juiced again for Chloe Allen. Allen reached on an error, but a Storm run scored. For the third time in a row, bases were loaded, and Taylor Phillips hit a 3 RBI double to right center. Rachel Ward then hit a two-run home run to left in her second at-bat of the inning, and with the bases cleared Kaitlin Peacock and Kylie Chandler both reached first and third. Leah Buck hit an RBI double, and another run was hit in by Kristin Peacock's single. The last run of the top half of the second was scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The Storm scored 11 runs on eight hits and four errors.
Between the second and fourth innings, the Pioneers scored six runs, making the score 11-7.
Rachel Ward hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth, which extended the Storm lead to five, however the Pioneers got that run back with an RBI single of their own, making the score 12-8.
In the top of the sixth, Storm offense scored two more runs on an RBI double hit by Kristin Peacock, and a sacrifice fly hit by Chloe Allen, giving the Storm a six run cushion.
Malone made a run in the bottom of the seventh and scored two runs, but the Storm defense held it down and secured the split in their opening G-MAC series of the serason. Parker Viele threw a complete game, increasing her record to 2-2, allowing four walks and earning four strikeouts in the win.
The Storm heads to North Canton tomorrow (Tuesday, Mar. 19) to take on Walsh University in another double-header.
