PHILIPPI, W.V. – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they swept Alderson Broaddus. The Storm won 5-1 in game one, and won 8-3 in game two.
After a scoreless first inning, the Storm grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Taylor Phillips (Ontario, Canada / John F. Ross) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Phillips advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), and later moved to third on a single from Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood). The next batter up Kaitlyn Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Payton Brownlee (Newark, Ohio / Granville) reached base and drove in Phillips. The Battlers tied the game with a run in the third before Lake Erie answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) got the inning going with as she reached on a fielder's choice, and the next batter up Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) hit a two run homerun to left field. Later in the inning, Phillips singled and Birtley and Kr. Peacock each walked to load the bases. Ka. Peacock singled and plated Phillips to give Lake Erie a 4-1 edge. The Storm tacked on a run in the fifth when Hajnosz hit a solo homerun to left field, and gave Lake Erie a 5-1 lead. Ashley Brown (Dayton, Ohio / Carlisle) closed the door on the Battlers, and the Storm won, 5-1. Brown was in the circle for the Storm as she pitched a complete game, and allowed one run on six hits. Brown struck out five, and earned her seventh win of the season.
Game two started with a scoreless first inning but, the Battlers scored three runs in the second to grab a 3-0 lead. The Storm answered with a pair of runs in the fourth. Doershuk got the inning going as she reached on a fielder's choice, and advanced to second as Phillips reached on an error. Later in the inning, Kr. Peacock singled and Doershuk and Phillips each came around to score. The Storm grabbed a lead in the fifth with four runs. Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) walked to start the innning, and Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) was hit by a pitch. The next batter up, Doershuk reached on an error, and plated Rizzo. After a Phillips walk loaded the bases, Alyssa Johnson (Wickliffe, Ohio / Wickliffe) doubled to left to clear the bases, and gave Lake Erie a 6-3 edge. The Storm added a pair of runs in the sixth as Ka. Peacock and Brownlee singled to lead off the inning. The next batter up Rizzo singled, and Ka. Peacock scored on a throwing error. Later in the inning, the Storm loaded the bases when S. Karako walked, and later Phillips walked to score S. Karako, to give Lake Erie an 8-3 advantage. Parker Viele (Byron, Mi.) pitched five shutout innings in relief for the Storm. Viele allowed only four hits, and struck out three.
Lake Erie will return to the diamond Saturday (April 28) when they travel to take on Davis and Elkins, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
