OWENSBORO, Ky.- The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they split their double header with Kentucky Wesleyan. The Storm fell in game one, 6-4 and bounced back in game two, 3-1.
The Panthers scratched across a run in the bottom of the first inning, and grabbed an early 1-0 edge. After a scoreless second inning the Panthers added three runs in the third, and took a 4-0 lead. The Storm responded in the top of the fourth when Kaitlyn Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) reached on an error, and Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) singled to start the inning. The next batter up Jennifer Doershuk (Streesboro, Ohio / Kent Roosevelt) was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases. Ashley Brown (Dayton, Ohio / Carlisle) doubled to left center field and drove in both Ka. Peacock and Hajnosz. The next batter up Taylor Phillips (Ontario, Canada / John F. Ross) grounded out, but plated Doershuk, to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Panthers. Kentucky Wesleyan answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and took a 6-3 edge into the sixth inning. Lake Erie cut into the Panthers lead with a run in the sixth when Brown got the inning started with a double. Later in the inning Alyssa Johnson (Wickliffe, Ohio / Wickliffe) hit a sacrifice fly, and plated Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) who pinch ran for Brown. The Storm could not complete the rally and fell, 6-4.
Game two started with three scoreless innings before the Storm scored a run in the top of the fourth. Doershuk got the inning started with an infield single, and then Brown singled up the middle to give Lake Erie runners on first and second. Later in the inning Morgan Smith (North Lima, Ohio / South Range) singled to right field and plated Doershuk. The Storm added to their lead in the fifth when Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) reached on an error and advanced to second. The next batter up Ka. Peacock reached on a fielder's choice and Hajnosz singled. The next batter up Doershuk singled to left field and drove in Ka. Peacock. The Panthers responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Storm lead to 2-1. Lake Erie regained a two run lead when Rizzo singled thru the left side and plated Phillips, who singled to lead off the inning. The Storm closed out the game and won, 3-1. Brown was in the circle for the Storm in game two as she allowed one run on six hits, and she struck out three batters.
Lake Erie will be back in action Friday (April 6) when they host Walsh, with the game set to start at 3 p.m.
