FINDLAY, Ohio – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they were swept by the University of Findlay.
The Storm jumped out to an early lead when Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) doubled and was later driven in by a Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) double to left field. The next batter up Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) hit a homerun and drove in S. Karako, to give the Storm a 3-0 lead. The Oilers scratched across a run in the bottom of the first, to make the score 3-1. Lake Erie responded with a run in the second when E. Karako drove home Rizzo. The Storm made the score 5-1 in the fourth when a S. Karako single plated Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) who doubled to start the inning. Findlay had a seven run fourth inning and took an 8-5 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning Lake Erie tacked on a run in the sixth when Kr. Peacock doubled and was later driven in by S. Karako, to make the score 8-6 in favor of the Oilers. Findlay held on to win game one, 8-6.
The Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two with a run in the first and second inning. The Storm responded with a three run third to take the lead. The inning started with an E. Karako double and then a single by Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown). Darrian Yanek (Youngstown, Ohio / South Range) then doubled home both E. Karako and Hajnosz. Later in the inning Kaitlyn Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) singled to plate Yanek, and give the Storm a 3-2 lead. The Oilers tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth. Findlay tacked on two more runs in the fifth and took a 5-3 lead. The Storm couldn't muster a comeback and fell 5-3 in the second game.
Lake Erie will return to the field Sunday (April 2) when they host Tiffin University with the double-header set to start at 1 p.m.
