CLERMONT, Fl. – The Lake Erie College softball team was in action today as they split their double header, falling to Cedarville before bouncing back to beat Northern State.
After a scoreless first inning, Cedarville loaded the bases in the second, but Kaylie Lewis (Sebring, Ohio / West Branch) pitched her way out of a jam and the game remained tied at 0-0. Cedarville broke the game open with a grand slam in the third, to take a 4-0 lead. Cedarville tacked on three more runs before the end of the inning and led, 7-0 in the third. Cedarville added a run in the fourth and took an 8-0 lead. The Storm cut into the lead when Kristin Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood) hit a three run homerun to drive in Alyssa Johnson (Wickliffe, Ohio / Wickliffe) and Arial Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). Later in the inning Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia) doubled and was driven in by a Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) single. Cedarville added a pair of runs in the fifth and took a 10-4 lead. Cedarville held on to win, 10-4.
In game two, the first and second innings were scoreless. The Storm tacked on a pair of runs in the third when Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) singled home Birtley and Rizzo. The Storm added to their lead in the fourth when Lindsey Valvoda (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) started the inning with a double and was later driven in by a Birtley single. The Wolves battled back and took the lead with four runs in the fifth, to take a 4-3 lead. The Storm answered back when Birtley doubled to deep right and plated both Lewis and Kaitlyn Peacock (Hebron, Ohio / Lakewood), to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Storm. Allyson Deemer (Poland, Ohio / Poland Seminary) finished off her complete game as she shut down the Wolves in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, to win the game, 5-4.
Deemer was on the mound for the Storm in game two, and she got her first win of the season. Deemer pitched a complete game as she allowed only five hits and had seven strikeouts in the game.
Lake Erie will be back in action Tuesday (March 21) when they battle with Ursuline in their home opener.
