PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College softball team swept Tiffin today (April 18th). With the wins the Storm improves to 10-18 overall and 4-12 in the conference and with the losses the Dragons are 20-16 overall and 11-7 in conference play.
Tiffin jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the second. The Storm took the lead with three runs in the third. The Storm scored when Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) doubled home Ariel Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) and Kate-Lynn Urgo (Vermillion, Ohio / Vermillion). Later in the inning Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) singled, and drove in Hajnosz to make the score 3-1. Hajnosz added to the Storm lead with a solo homerun in the fifth, to make the score 4-1. Hannah Shevenell (Madera, Calif. / Liberty) made the score 5-1, in favor of the Storm with a solo homerun in the sixth. The Storm held on to win the game, 5-1.
In game two, Shevenell hit her second solo homerun of the day, and gave the Storm a 1-0 advantage in the fourth. Tiffin responded in the fifth with a run to tie the game at 1-1. Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) singled through the left side to drive in both Jessacca Gironda (Kent State) and Lindsay Valvoda (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), to give the Storm a 3-1 lead in the seventh. Tiffin scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Storm won, 3-2.
Dawn Ondercin pitched in both games, went all 14 innings, and earned her seventh and eighth wins on the season. Ondercin allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on 12 hits, and had five strikeouts on the day.
Lake Erie will be back in action tomorrow (April 19th) when they host Ohio Dominican, with the first game of the double header starting at 12 P.M.
