CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lake Erie College softball team split their double header action today (March 4th) as they defeated USciences and fell to Notre Dame College. The Storm is 3-3 on the season.
The Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) doubled home Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) and Kate-Lynn Urgo (Vermillion, Ohio / Vermillion) in the top of the first. USciences answered back with a run the bottom of the first to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Storm. The Storm loaded the bases and added three runs in the second inning, with Urgo, Lindsey Valvoda (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), and Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) each driving in runs. USciences got two in the second, but the Storm still had a 5-3 advatange. Uscienes tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the third. L. Karako singled to left field and drove home Valvoda in the 4th, and the Storm regained the lead, 6-5. Lake Erie added two more runs in the seventh when Hannah Shevenell (Madera, Calif. / Liberty) doubled and drove in Hajnosz, and Darrian Yanek (Youngstown, Ohio / South Range) singled to score Marissa Rizzo (Northfield Center, Ohio / Nordonia), the Storm won the game 8-5.
Lake Erie started the game when leadoff hitter Jessacca Gironda (Kent State) singled up the middle and stole second. She was later driven in by S. Karako who singled up the middle to make the score 1-0. Notre Dame took the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the first. The game remained 3-1 till the top of the seventh when Hajnosz hit her third homerun of the season, but the Storm was unable to complete the comeback, and fell 3-2.
Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio / Brookside) pitched in both games and threw five innings in each game. Combined in the two games she gave up 11 hits, stroke out four batters, and walked none.
