PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College softball team were unable to slide past the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader Friday (April 5), falling 7-0 and 6-0.
The Storm (2-18, 0-10) presented the first threat of the game in the third inning. Kyleah Burton-Smiles (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) got on base with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a Courtney Hawk (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie) sacrifice bunt. Maddi Klemp (Akron, Ohio/Coventry) then singled down the left field line to advance Burton-Smiles to third but Cardinals (9-11, 5-1 GLIAC) pitcher Jillian Williamson forced a groundout on the next play to get out of the jam.
The game remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the Cardinals produced three runs in the top of the frame on three hits and one Storm error to go ahead 3-0. Saginaw Valley tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh, including a two run homerun by Kaitlyn McBride, to put the game away.
McBride led the Cardinals with three hits, two runs and two RBI while Ashley Beal had three RBI on two hits. Williamson pitched seven innings, limiting the Storm to four hits.
In game two, Saginaw Valley was able to capitalize on a Storm fielding error, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added one more in the second. Cardinal's pitcher Sarah Vrabel limited the Storm to just two hits as Saginaw Valley tacked on one more run in the fourth en route to the win.
Jeniffer Gratz (Richwood, Ohio/North Union) led the Storm with two hits in game two while Hawk had a stolen base.
The Storm are back in action Saturday (April 6) when they play host to Lake Superior State University for a GLIAC doubleheader.
