PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College (5-44, 2-30 GLIAC) nearly pulled off a road upset of GLIAC Tournament bound Ohio Dominican University (26-26, 20-12 GLIAC) in the final games of the season for the Storm.
Lake Erie fell 4-3 in game one and dropped game two 10-0 in five innings in Columbus, Ohio.
In game one, the Storm got a strong start from sophomore Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside), holding the Panthers scoreless in the first three innings. Lake Erie had a great chance to strike in the top of the first when freshman Maddi Klemp (Akron, Ohio/Coventry), sophomore Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison) and senior Ali Heming (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) all singled but the frame ended on a double play.
The Storm did strike first in the game, in the top of the fourth as sophomore Krista Haley (Holland, Ohio/Springfield Holland) brought in senior Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) with a sacrifice fly. The Panthers counted with three runs on four hits in the fourth but the Storm came right back in the fifth inning to tie the game with a pair of runs. Brotzman drove in freshman Amber Dowen (New Lyne, Ohio/Pymatuning Valley), who led off the inning with a single, and Foley singled home Klemp with two outs.
Neither team had more than one hit the rest of the way with Ohio Dominican winning in the bottom of the seventh when Ondercin lost control, walking three batters before allowing the winning run on a hit by pitch with one out.
Each team had eight hits in the contest as Klemp had three and Foley a pair for Lake Erie.
Lake Erie was unable to recover in game two, as it was outhit 18-3 in the loss. Senior Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) went the distance and suffered the loss. Brotzman had a pair of hits for Lake Erie with junior Chelsey Beck (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) slugging the other.
The Storm has completed their 2012 season.
