PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The start of a three GLIAC doubleheaders in three days road trip did not go Lake Erie College's (5-32, 2-18 GLIAC) way as it fell to Ferris State University (20-18, 11-9 GLIAC), 4-1 and 10-0 in five innings at FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
In game one, Lake Erie got a solid complete game pitching effort from sophomore Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) but was unable to capitalize. After allowing two runs in the first inning, Ondercin settle in, allowing four runs total on six hits.
Down 2-0 after one, the score stayed that way until the top of the fourth when senior Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) got the Storm's first hit, went to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a base hit to center by sophomore Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison and was brought in on a RBI groundout by sophomore Jeniffer Gratz (Richwood, Ohio/North Union ).
Ferris State added two runs in the bottom of the sixth off a tiring Ondercin for the final 4-1 margin. Lake Erie got runners on base in each of the last three innings but was unable to move them along.
In game two, Lake Erie's only hit was a singled to left in the second inning by Rathge. The Storm fell behind early as the Bulldogs plated one in the first inning, three in the second and another in the third. Ferris State scored five in the fifth inning for the final dagger.
Senior Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) suffered the loss allowing four runs in one-plus innings of work.
Weather permitting, Lake Erie will be in action again tomorrow as it travels to face Hillsdale College at 1:00 p.m.
