PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Senior catcher Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) went three-for-three in game one but it was her final hit, a game-tying grand slam, which propelled Lake Erie College (4-13, 1-3 GLIAC) to a six-run fifth inning and an 8-5 win over Lake Superior State University (4-7, 1-3 GLIAC) in game one of a GLIAC doubleheader at Kiwanis Recreation Park in Painesville, Ohio.

Looking for its first GLIAC sweep as a member of the conference, the Storm fell in game two, 5-1.
In game one, sophomore Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside) held the Lakers hitless through two innings before a walk and a infield hit set the table for a LSSU three run home run to left in the top of the third. In the bottom of the inning, the Storm got one back as a sophomore Julian Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison) singled and Foley scored after some clever base running by the pair.
LSSU extended its lead to 5-1 in the fifth as it opened the inning with three straight hits but the Storm threatened to rumble in the bottom of the inning as sophomore Jeniffer Gratz (Richwood, Ohio/North Union) redshirt freshman Maddi Klemp (Akron, Ohio/Coventry) and junior Chelsea Bleck (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) all singled to load the bases. With no outs Foley stepped to the plate and belted a two-strike pitch to left center for the grand slam and Lake Erie's first long ball of the season to tie the score 5-5. The Storm were not done in the inning as Brotzman singled and senior outfielder Haley Rathge (Edon, Ohio/Napoleon) doubled her to third with one out. An infield single by senior first baseman Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland) loaded the bases and sophomore Fayth Atkins (Holland, Ohio/Springfield) gave Lake Erie a lead it would never relinquish as she drove Brotzman in with an infield single. Batting for the second time in the frame, Gratz drove in Rathge with a sacrifice fly to give Lake Erie the 7-5 advantage.
The Storm added an insurance run in the sixth as sophomore Krista Haley (Holland, Ohio/Springfield Holland) drove in Foley. Ondercin cruised through the last two innings allowing only a single hit as she picked up her third win of the season.
Ondercin (3-5) allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out four in her eighth complete game of the season.
Foley went three-for-three with a home run, double and a walk with four runs batted in and three runs scored. Bating 4-7 in the order, Brotzman, Haley, Rathge and Pennell each accounted for a pair of Lake Erie's 15 hits in the contest.
In game two, Lake Erie senior starter Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) stranded the bases loaded in the first inning but the Lakers used five hits and an error in the second inning to plate four runs. It would be enough as the Storm stranded the bases loaded in the third before plating their lone run in the fourth on an RBI double by Rathge. The Lakers added a lone run in the fifth inning, knocking Ronde out of the game in the process. Lake Erie was unable to overcome the 5-1 deficit as they went down in order in the fifth and sixth. In the seventh, the Storm threatened with a pair of walks before a ground out ended the game.
Lake Erie had four hits in the second game with Rathge's double being the only extra base effort.
The Storm close a GLIAC home weekend tomorrow with a doubleheader vs. Northwood University at noon.
