Lake Erie College softball (7-17, 0-8 GLIAC) dropped a pair of home contests to GLIAC leading Tiffin University (16-7, 7-1), 12-0 in five innings, and 2-1 in eight innings, on a brisk day at Kiwanis Recreation Park in Painesville, Ohio.

After scoring two runs in the second inning of game one, the Dragons broke the game wide open by plating nine in the third frame.  Tiffin scored one more in the fourth for the final margin as junior starting pitcher Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) suffered the loss.

The Storm managed just three hits in game one with senior Brittany Sostre (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge), junior Ali Heming (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) and freshman Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison) each having singles in the game.

Game two got off to an ominous start for the Storm as the first batter of the game for the Dragons hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first.  Things quickly settled in however and the game turned into a pitcher's dual.  Each team managed just five hits in the game, with Lake Erie starter Sara Shields (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) striking out nine including all six outs in the second and third innings.

The score stayed 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning.  Junior shortstop Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland) singled with one out and after advancing on a wild pitch, was singled in by freshman first baseman Jeniffer Gratz (Richwood, Ohio/North Union). Shields was commanding over the late innings as she retired 11 straight batters with the game going to extra frames.

In the bottom of the eighth inning with one out and a runner on second base, Tiffin pitcher Mindy Meredith batted for herself for the first time on the day and rope a double down the right field line to give the Dragons the extra inning win.  Meredith also went the entire way on the mound with 13 strike outs.

Brotzman had two of Lake Erie's five hits in game two with Shields also adding a base hit.

This weekend set will continue tomorrow with Lake Erie taking on Tiffin for two more games beginning at noon.
