Lake Erie College (5-7) split a pair of down to the wire games at the second and final day of the Salem Tournament hosted by West Virginia Wesleyan in Salem, Va. In game one, Lake Erie fell to West Virginia State, 4-3, and in game two, the Storm handled East Stroudsburg University, 7-6.
Against West Virginia State, freshman Sara Shields (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo) got the start and was later relieved by junior Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg). Ronde also worked in relief in game two along with freshman Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio/Brookside), combining with senior starter Lauren Malicki (Independence, Ohio/Independence) to grab a split for the Storm. Ondercin earned the win by striking out four in the final two innings while allowing a pair of unearned runs.
At the plate, Lake Erie got two of its four hits in game one from freshman Juliana Brotzman (Madison, Ohio/Madison). In game two, the Storm managed 15 hits, including a home run from senior third baseman Brittany Sostre (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge). Junior catcher Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) led the way with three base hits as all nine starters had at least one.
Lake Erie is back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Edinboro University for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
