URBANA, Ohio (March 15, 2009) - Lake Erie College had two players selected to the Urbana All-Tournament Team - freshman catcher Megan Foley (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) and sophomore outfielder Danielle Finkler (Chardon, Ohio/Berkshire) - as the Storm went 0-3 at the event. Lake Erie lost to Lake Superior State, 8-4, Grand Valley State, 4-0 and Urbana, 4-3.
Against Lake Superior State, who the Storm played at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. a week ago and lost, 7-0, Lake Erie got off to a slow start. The Storm allowed its opponents all eight runs in the first two innings and didn't score its first run until the bottom of the fifth when freshman first baseman Lindsey Pennell (Columbus, Ohio/Westland) doubled and moved around the base paths on passed balls. A three-run sixth inning cut the deficit in half as Lake Erie totaled four hits. Sophomore second baseman Britt'nie Bartow (Stow, Ohio/Stow) singled to start the inning, followed by a double by Foley and an RBI single by senior left fielder Katie Staats (Willoughby, Ohio/South). A two-run double by senior third baseman Brittney Binko (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy) rounded out the team's scoring for the game. Foley finished 3-for-3 with one run and Bartow was 2-for-4 with a run. The Storm had eight hits in the game.
In the second game on Saturday, Lake Erie took on Grand Valley State and was unable to score. Freshman shortstop Jamie Wodecki (Northfield, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) singled in the fifth for the team's lone hit of the game.
On Sunday, the game's outcome came down to the bottom of the seventh inning with Lake Erie and Urbana tied at three. The hosts scored the winning run with one out. Lake Erie had eight hits with a two run, three-hit fifth inning in which Finkler and Foley singled and Bartow doubled. Freshman Sam Ronde (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) went six innings, striking out six and giving up just one earned run.
For the three-game tournament, Foley hit .625, going 5-for-8 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored. She also walked twice and had an on base percentage of .700 with a slugging percentage of .875. Staats went 3-for-7 to hit .429 with one run and one RBI. Finkler finished the weekend 2-for-2 with one run.
Lake Erie (2-11) is at Indiana (Pa.) for a double header on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
