(Painesville, Ohio) - The Lake Erie Men's Soccer team (1-0-0) outlasted Ashland University (0-1-0) in a double-overtime thriller for the 2019 season opener, securing a 1-0 victory.
Both teams battled on the pitch, as neither team could break free of each other's defense. The Storm blasted 10 shots up, while the Eagles only put up 5 shots in the game. Neither team could gain momentum in regular time.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the momentum finally shifted in the Storms favor. Senior forward Javier Borreguero went down hard by a foul committed by an Ashland defender causing a stoppage of play.
As play continued with 5:30 remaining in the second overtime Borreguero was able to stay in the game to free himself up and boot a shot from 25 yards out over the outstretched goalkeeper's head to score the golden goal.
Lake Erie goalkeeper Tom John made 3 saves to earn his first win and shutout of the season.
"Tonight was a great result for us. Ashland is a very hard team to play and the effort from our guys was tremendous. I'm incredibly happy for our guys as I think they deserved to get rewarded for tonight's performance," said head coach Louie Rolko.
"We focused on set pieces and 2nd balls and we won and ultimately won the game. It's a short celebration as we play Slippery Rock on Saturday but for now, we will enjoy the moment."
The Storm will be back at home Saturday, September 7, when they host Slippery Rock. Kickoff for the Storm is slated at 6 p.m. at Jack Britt Stadium.
