PAINESVILLE, Ohio- As history has shown in the series between Lake Erie and Saginaw Valley State, you can expect a battle on the field. Lake Erie and Saginaw Valley State battled into overtime on Friday (Sept. 23) night at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
Saginaw Valley won the game on a golden goal in the first overtime period, 2-1 over the Storm. Lake Erie fell to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the GLIAC.
"Tonight, we were not at our best and struggled to do the little things right, but still managed to hold a lead with 11 minutes to play. It was disappointing to concede the tying goal so late on and ultimately the game-winner. Credit to SVSU for a solid game. We will take this as a learning moment and look to bounce back on Sunday," said Storm Head Coach Kevin Brenner.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half.
Lake Erie scored first as Max Maguire (Letchworth, England/Hitchin College) scored his first Lake Erie goal in the 61st minute. Maguire put a shot just past the goalie's left side.
In the 80th minute, Saginaw Valley tied the game with a goal that came from a corner kick.
With less than two minutes left in the first overtime period, Saginaw Valley completed the comeback with a golden goal from the top of the box. The Cardinals took the game 2-1.
Saginaw Valley dominated the shot count as they outshot the Storm 19-4.
Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France/Lycee Bristol) made seven saves in the net and allowed two goals.
The Storm will look to redeem their GLIAC Tournament loss to Northwood on Sunday (Sept. 25) as they face off at the Britt.
