ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Lake Erie College men's soccer team was 21 minutes away from a second straight victory to open the season before a late onslaught from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, including a hat trick by Tyler Collico, lifted the home team to a 4-1 victory Sunday (Sept. 2) at the Chaminade College Prepatory Soccer Field.
The Storm (1-1) took a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. Freshmanmidfielder Ryan Gibson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) found classmate Anthony Novak (Toronto, Ont./St. Mary Catholic) 10 yards from the goal and Novak put it in off the cross bar for his first collegiate goal.
That lead held up until the 70th minute when Collico put the ball behind his back and past Storm sophomore goalkeeper Filip Ljubevski (Ajax, Ont./Pikering) to tie the game at 1-1. A miscue by the Lake Erie defense a little over two minutes later resulted in an own goal and a 2-1 Triton (1-1) lead.
The Storm played two-men down for the final 40 minutes following a double red card. Lake Erie had three red cards on the day and six cards total.
Collico scored two more times in the final 10 minutes of the contest to help UMSL pull away.
Ljubevski made nine saves, but was charged with four goals allowed. The Tritons held a 17-7 edge in shots. Patrick Ream made four saves and allowed just the one goal in net for UMSL.
After splitting its opening two-game road trip in "The Show Me State," the Storm return home on Saturday, Sept. 8, against GLIAC preseason favorite Notre Dame College in the league opener at Britt Stadium.
