PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Junior Randy Danso's (Toronto, Canada/North Count Community College) golden goal just 1:12 into overtime gave Lake Erie College (6-6-2, 4-3-2) a huge 2-1 GLIAC victory over Northwood University (6-3-2, 4-3-2) at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
Junior Jake Shelton (Newburg, Md./Webber International University) got the ball in front of the ball of Northwood's goal and his touch found Danso who converted the open look as the LEC players stormed the field as they won their first overtime match this season.
Senior goalkeeper Ricky Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) picked up a rare assist and made four saves in the match. Lake Ere was celebrating senior day with three on the squad, Carreira and defenders Kyle Roesch (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) and Miroslav Peter (Mentor, Ohio)
Lake Erie was content to sit back in the first half and stifle the Northwood attack. The Timberwolves took all seven shots in the half but Carreira stopped all four which were on goal.
The Storm's counter strategy finally paid off in the 70th as Carreira corralled a Northwood free kick and punted a ball which freshman Danny Eborall (Sheffield, England/Averett University) beat his defender to on the run out. Eborall was able to flick the ball by Northwood's goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead. Northwood was forced to press forward and it worked as in the 80th minute, Chen Tzfania four Shawn Rydzewski who scored from 10 yards out to even the score. A scuffle ensued following the goal which led to a double red card and each team playing with 10 men the rest of the way.
Northwood held a 12-5 advantage in shots with Lake Erie's only two attempt on net both resulting in goals.
Lake Erie has four contests left on the season, all on the road, beginning Wednesday at Salem International in a non-conference match a 2:00 p.m.
