PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The scoresheet was almost dead even in all aspects of the game, but Ohio Valley University (3-5) used a first half penalty kick to propel to a 2-1 win over Lake Erie College (4-5) in Parkersburg, W.Va.
Each team committed 14 fouls in the game and both put seven shots on goal. Ohio Valley held slight advantages in total shots (13-11) and corner kicks (3-2).
A foul in the box in the games 18th minute Ohio Valley a penalty kick opportunity which Roberto Jofra converted. It was the lone goal of the first half as freshman Sam Etherton (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) was impressive in his first career action replacing starter Ricky Carriera (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) in goal for the Storm.
That 1-0 score lasted until the 85th minute. With Lake Erie pressing forward in an attempt to send the game to overtime, Jofra was able to slip behind the Storm defense for his second goal of the game. It proved to be a key insurance goal as Lake Erie scored at 87:13 as sophomore transfer James Grogan (Leeds, England/Averett University) scored his second goal as a member of the Storm with fellow transfer Stewart Bath (Billingham, England/Averett University) picking up his team-leading third assist.
Etherton made four saves in the game.
Lake Erie continues its week with a road trip to Saginaw Valley State Friday at 4:30 p.m.
