PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The 12th ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team was in action today as they defeated Maryville, 13-5. With the win the Storm improves to 6-1 overall on the season.
The Saints opened the scoring with a goal, before the Storm responded late in the first quarter when James Chadwick (Amherst, N.Y. / Amherst Central) scored off a feed from Patrick Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy). A minute later Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) scored off an assist from Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer) which gave the Storm a 2-1 edge. Shafer scored his second goal of the game with two seconds remaining in the quarter, and gave Lake Erie a 3-1 edge heading into the second quarter.
The Storm carried their momentum over to the second quarter when Renaud scored off a feed from Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon St. Jude) to make the score, 4-1 three minutes into the second quarter. Four minutes later, the Saints cut the Storm lead to 4-2 with a goal. Lake Erie responded a minute later when Reed Hnidy (Saskatoon, Sask. / Genesee CC) caused a turnover and scored an unassisted goal. Maryville answered with a goal of their own, but the Storm led 5-3 at the intermission.
The Storm came out of the locker room ready to play as they scored the opening four goals of the second half. The Storm's first goal came a minute into the third quarter when Shafer scored his third goal of the game. Four minutes later, P. Bay scored off a feed from Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy). The Storm took an 8-3 edge when Shafer scored off an assist from Renaud with just over eight minutes remaining in the third quarter. Two minutes later, the Storm made the score 9-3 when T. Bay scored an unassisted goal. Less than a minute later Hunter Hays (Plain City, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) scored a man up goal and gave Lake Erie a 10-3 edge. The Saints scored a goal with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter, but trailed the Storm 10-4.
The Saints scored the opening goal of the final quarter to cut the Storm lead to 10-5. The Storm closed out the game with the final three goals. Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) scored back to back goals for the Storm and Shafer scored the final goal of the game to propel the Storm to a 13-5 win.
The Storm was led by Shafer as he had five goals, and a ground ball. Daigle added to the Lake Erie offense with a pair of goals in the game. Renaud and P. Bay each added two assists and a goal in the game for the Storm. Bret Swan (Acton City, Ont. / Halton Hills) controlled the game for Lake Erie as he won 18 of 21 face-offs and grabbed 11 ground balls. Hnidy led the defense as he had five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Lake Erie will be back in action Tuesday (April 3) when they host Davis and Elkins, with the game set to start at 12 p.m.
