PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The 12th ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team was in action today as they were victorious over the University of Indianapolis, 13-4. With the win the Storm improves to 5-1 overall.
The Storm opened the scoring just over a minute into the game when Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) found the back of the net off a feed from Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg). A little over two minutes later, the Storm made the score 2-0 when Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) scored an unassisted goal. Less than a minute later, Shafer scored his second goal of the game off an assist from Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon St. Jude) to give the Storm a 3-0 edge, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Storm continued to build upon their lead when Bishop made the score 4-0 with just over seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter. The final seven minutes were scoreless, and the Storm entered the second quarter ahead, 4-0.
The Storm carried their momentum over to the second quarter as Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer) scored a man up goal off a feed from Shafer. After five minutes of scoreless action the Storm made the score 6-0 when Shafer scored off an assist from Renaud, with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. The Storm continued to assert their dominance when Shafer scored off a feed from Donohue, to make the score 7-0 with six minutes to play in the half. Lake Erie notched an 8-0 lead when Mack Fall (Morgantown, W. Va. / University) found the back of the net off an assist from Renaud, with just under four minutes left in the half. With 20 seconds remaining in the half the Greyhounds scored and the Storm entered the intermission ahead, 8-1.
The Storm came out of the locker room ready to play as Bishop scored the opening goal of the second half. After a five minute scoring drought, the Greyhounds scored and cut the Storm lead to 9-2 with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Two minutes later the Storm responded when Shafer scored off a feed from Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy), and the Storm entered the fourth quarter ahead 10-2.
The fourth quarter started as a defensive battle, as the opening five minutes were scoreless. Indianapolis opened the fourth quarter scoring with a pair of goals, and cut the Storm lead to 10-4 with just under eight minutes remaining in the game. One minute later the Storm responded when Shafer scored his sixth goal of the game, and gave Lake Erie an 11-4 lead. Roughly a minute later the Storm grabbed a 12-4 lead when T. Bay scored a man up goal off an assist from Renaud. With just over three minutes remaining in the game Shafer scored off a feed from Donohue. The Storm won, 13-4.
The Storm was led by Shafer as he had seven goals, and two assists in the game. Renaud led the Storm in assists with three, and scored a goal in the game. Reed Hindy (Saskatoon, Sask. / Genesee CC) led the Storm defense as he had five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Conor Sharkey (Cambridge, Ont. / Jacob Hespeler / Pfieffer) was in the net for the Storm, he faced 30 shots, 17 of which were on goal, and made 13 saves.
Lake Erie will be back in action Friday (March 30) when they host Maryville, with the game set to start at 7 p.m.
