PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team was in action today as they defeated Walsh, 22-10. With the win the 20th ranked Storm improves to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in Great Midwest action.
The Storm jumped out to an early lead when they scored on their opening possession as Bret Swan (Acton City, Ont. / Halton Hills) won the opening faceoff. Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) found the back of the net to give the Storm a 1-0 edge. Lake Erie added to their lead four minutes later as Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer) found the back to give the Storm a 2-0 advantage. Lake Erie tacked on a third straight goal when Renaud scored off a feed from Bishop. The Storm continued to add on the goals as Bishop scored back to back goals to give the Storm a 5-0 edge, with five minutes remaining in the first quarter. After four minutes of scoreless action, Lake Erie made the score 6-0 when Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) found the back of the net. Lake Erie notched a seventh consecutive goal with less than a minute remaining in the quarter, when Nicholas Tschetter (Hilton, N.Y. / Aquanis Institute) scored off a feed from Patrick Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy).
Lake Erie's momentum carried over to the second quarter as they scored the first four goals of the second quarter. Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon St. Jude), Shafer, Reed Hnidy (Saskatoon, Sask. / Genesee CC), and Renaud scored the four goals to give the Storm an 11-0 edge with just over seven minutes remaining in the half. The Cavaliers responded with back to back goals to cut the Storm lead to 11-2. Two minutes later the Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy) scored off a feed from Renaud to give the Storm a double-digit advantage. After a Walsh goal, the Storm scored with 17 seconds remaining in the half off a goal by Shafer, and took a 13-3 edge into the intermission.
The Storm opened the second half with a goal by Alexander Corbett (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Bishop Timon) to give the Storm a 14-3 edge. Walsh responded with three straight goals, and cut the Storm lead to 14-6. Over the final six minutes of the third quarter the Storm rattled off four goals to enter the fourth quarter with an 18-6 advantage. The goals were scored by Jordan Hendrycks (Ottawa, Ont. / A.Y. Jackson), Tommy Bichsel (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville North), Renaud, and Corbett.
Walsh scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter a little over a minute into the fourth, before Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) responded with a goal for the Storm. Two minutes later the Cavaliers answered with back to back goals to cut the Storm lead to 19-9. A goal from Tschetter off a feed from Bishop gave the Storm a 20-9 edge, with just over four minutes remaining in the game. Walsh scored a goal before Lake Erie closed the game with back to back goals, as the final goal of the game was scored by Hunter Hays (Plain City, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) off an assist by Brandon Sheedy (Toronto, Ont.). The Storm won the game, 22-10.
The Storm was led by Renaud as he had four goals in the game as well as a pair of assists. Shafer added four goals, and three groundballs. Bishop added three goals, two assists, and a caused turnover in the game. Hnidy led the Storm defense as he had five groundballs, four caused turnovers, and a goal in the game for the Storm. The Storm had 12 different players score in the game. Swan was a key factor in the Storm win, as he won 18 of his 21 face-offs, and picked up 10 groundballs in the game.
Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (March 17) when they host Alderson Broaddus, with the game set to start at 12 p.m.
