PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The ninth-ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team defeated Ohio Valley University 13-5 Wednesday (March 16) to open ECAC play in Painesville.
The Fighting Scots struck first, scoring six minutes in. They added one more a minute later before the Storm fought back. John Kezerian (Howell, Mich./Malden Catholic) scored his first goal, assisted by Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg). Less than a minute later, Courtland Black-Araujo (Bowmanville, Ont./St. Stephen/Onondaga) tied the game on an unassisted goal. Kezerian's second goal gave the lead to the Storm for the first time. Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont./Waterdown District/Pfeiffer) extended the lead to 4-2 off an assist by Shafer to close the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Fighting Scots got back on the board five minutes in. Two minutes later, Jacob Mitchell (York, Pa./Dallastown) answered for the Storm on Shafer's third assist. Connor Ward (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) ended scoring for the Storm in the half on an unassisted goal.
The Storm outscored the Fighting Scots 4-0 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 10-3. Mitchell Shafer and Renaud had a goal and an assist. Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and Black-Araujo had a goal while Mitchell Stokes (New Westminster, BC./New Westminster) had an assist.
Ohio Valley scored the first goal of the fourth, cutting the lead to 10-4. The Storm answered with goals from Hunter Hays (Plain City, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales), assisted by Mack Fall (Morgantown, W. Va./University) and James Chadwick (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central), assisted by Black-Araujo. After the Fighting Scots scored their fifth goal, Nick Benningfield (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg/Limestone) closed out the game with an unassisted goal.
Mitchell Shafer led the Storm with a goals and four assists with two groundballs. Renaud ended the game with two goals and one assist with two groundballs as well. Kezerian scored twice while Black-Araujo had a two goals and an assist. Lucas Shafer, Hays, Mitchell, Chadwick, Benningfield and Ward had a goal while Stokes and Fall had an assist.
Kole Robinson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) had six caused turnovers and five groundballs. Liam Smith (Webster, N.Y./Aquinas Academy) and Brett Swan (Acton City, Ont./Halton Hills) had six groundballs apiece.
Swan won 13-of-19 faceoffs.
The Storm is back in action Saturday (March 19) at home against Pfieffer University.
