PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College (5-6, 2-5 ECC) was unable to overcome a five-goal first quarter run by Wheeling Jesuit University (7-8, 1-8 ECC) in a 12-7 loss in East Coast Conference play at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville, Ohio.
Juniors Keegan Bal (Coquitlam, B.C/Centennial Secondary) and Josh Becker (Salamanca, N.Y/Salamanca) and sophomore Trevor Tarte (Amherstburg, Ontario/Kiski Prep) each scored twice for the Storm. Freshman Reagan Harding (Saskatoon, SK/Bishop Jones Mahoney) netted the other Lake Erie goal.
The Storm kicked off the scoring just 56 seconds in on an unassisted rip from Becker. It was the last lead for Lake Erie on the night as the Cardinals scored five straight goals. WJU took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Tyler Buchan at 10:39 and extended it to 5-1 at 4:20 on a goal by Tyler Johnson. Becker and Bal cut the Cardinal lead in half in a span of 20 seconds but WJU scored with seven seconds to go, to double up Lake Erie, 6-3, at the end of the first quarter.
Tarte scored just 34 seconds into the second quarter to get LEC within two and it was the last goal for either side for nearly 12 minutes. WJU score with 2:39 to play in the half and went to the break with a 7-4 advantage.
Lake Erie was never able to get closer than three in the second half as the teams traded goals within the first two minutes of the second half and the Cardinals scored again in the final two minutes of the quarter to go to the fourth ahead 9-5.
Tarte scored the first goal of the fourth but WJU scored the next three to put the game away.
In goal for Lake Erie, junior Alexander Wisner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) made 10 saves.
Lake Erie will be back in action at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium when it hosts Chestnut Hill University Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
