PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team saw an early 4-2 lead vanish as host Mercy College outscored the Storm 9-4 in the second and third quarters Saturday night (March 25) at SUNY Purchase. LEC tried to rally with three goals in fourth, but ultimately came up short in the 12-10 East Coast Conference loss.
Juniors Keegan Bal (Coquitlam, B.C./Centennial Secondary) and Josh Becker (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca) and freshman Justin Goodwin (New Westminster, B.C./New Westminster Secondary) each scored in the opening 15 minutes as the Storm (2-3, 0-2 ECC) took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.
Sophomore Trevor Tarte (Amherstburg, Ontario/Kiski Prep [Pa.]) tallied a goal early in the second to make it 4-2 before Mercy (2-3, 2-2 ECC) scored five straight goals – all five by different players – to pull ahead 7-4. Tarte scored with 2:41 left in the half to stop the Mavericks' run and make it 7-5 at halftime.
Joe Poppe and Patrick Hodapp each scored twice to start the second half as the avericks pushed the lead to 11-5. Sophomore MacGregor Johnston (Nanaimo, BC/Dover Bay) scored two goals to close the period and bring Lake Erie within 11-7.
After Alex Martello scored his second goal of the game to give Mercy a five-goal edge at 12-7, the Storm scored twice to move within three at the five-minute mark, but did not score again until Tarte found the net with 25 seconds to play.
Tarte finished with three goals and Johnston had the two and an assist to lead the Storm. Five players finished with one goal each.
Four Mavericks scored two goals each, led by Hodapp who finished with four points (two goals, two assists).
Junior Alexander Wisner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) made 10 saves in goal for Lake Erie. T.J. DiCarlo made nine saves for the Mavericks.
Lake Erie continues its season-opening road swing with another ECC contest at Dowling College on Saturday, March 31.
