COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated in overtime by Ohio Dominican, 81-77.
The Panthers opened the game with buckets on their first two possessions, but the Storm responded with a pair of three pointers from Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) and Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) to give Lake Erie a 6-5 edge. After Ohio Dominican tied the game at eight, the Storm went on a 5-0 run that was capped by a Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Highland) three pointer, to give Lake Erie a 13-8 lead at the under 16 minute media timeout. After the media timeout, an 11-3 Panthers run saw them take a 19-16 edge. Ohio Dominican led 22-21 at the under eight minute media timeout. Out of the break, a three pointer by Erron James (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) gave the Storm a 24-22 edge. The teams traded baskets until the under four minute media timeout as the Storm led, 34-29 at the timeout. The Panthers ended the half on a 6-0 run, and took a 35-34 advantage into the intermission.
Lake Erie came out of the locker room ready to play as they opened the second half on a 8-2 run, and took a 42-37 advantage early in the second half. The run was capped by a layup from James off an assist from David Dunnigan (Cleveland, Ohio / Padua). The Storm maintained a 50-45 edge at the first media timeout of the second half. Out of the break, the Panthers tied the game at 52 points apiece before back to back baskets by Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) gave the Storm a 56-52 edge with just under 12 minutes to play. Ohio Dominican responded with an 11-0 run to take a 63-56 lead with just under nine minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets for seven minutes, and the Panthers led 69-60 with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. The Storm ended the second half on a 10-1 run. The run was culminated by a Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) layup with 11 seconds remaining in the game. The Middendorf layup tied the game at 70 points apiece and forced overtime.
Rhodes opened the overtime period with a pair of foul shots, before the Panthers made back to back baskets to take a 74-72 edge. Kynard tied the game for the Storm with a jumper, before the Panthers scored four quick points and took a 78-74 advantage. The Storm fought hard but fell, 81-77 in overtime.
The Storm was led by Humphrey as he had a career high in points with 26, had four rebounds, and four assists. Kynard added 16 points, and had a pair of assists. James pitched in with 12 points, and seven rebounds.
Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Saturday (Feb. 17) when they travel to take on Cedarville, with the game set to tip at 4:15 p.m.
