PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated by Hillsdale, 68-62.
Hillsdale opened the game with a 5-0 lead before Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) made a pair of free throws, trimming the lead to 5-2 with 17:23 left in the first half. The Chargers took a nine point lead with an 8-2 run over the next two minutes. Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) kick started a Lake Erie 6-0 rally as the Storm cut the lead to 13-10. Hillsdale scored the next four points as they led 17-10 at the under 12 media timeout. Hillsdale extended the lead to 11 until Humphrey and Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palestine) converted back-to-back three pointers. The Morris three pointer pulled the Storm within five with 8:34 remaining in the half. The Chargers regained a double-digit lead with a 5-0 run afterwards. David Dunnigan (Cleveland, Ohio / Padua) cut the lead to single-digits twice with two layups in a two minute span. Humphrey ended the half with a layup as Hillsdale led 36-26.
Kynard and Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) each had two layups as the Storm opened the second half with an 8-2 run, including six straight points. The Storm came within two after a layup by Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) with 14:22 left. Hillsdale used four straight free throws for a six point advantage at 44-38. Dunnigan had six points and Morris nailed a three pointer as the Storm used a 9-1 run to take their first lead of the contest, 47-45 with 9:52 left to go. Hillsdale regained the lead with a three pointer but the Storm responded with a 7-0 run, including a three pointer from Harrison Riggs (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's). The Riggs three forced a Hillsdale timeout, as Lake Erie took a 54-48 advantage with 8:06 left in the half. The Chargers regained a 58-57 lead with a 10-3 run over a four minute span. Kynard slimmed the lead to one with a layup with 2:24 left. The Chargers held on for a 68-62 victory.
Dunnigan and Kynard ended with a team-high 12 points each. Kynard led the Storm with seven rebounds in the contest. Humphrey added 11 points and Morris and Scott each finished with nine points.
Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (Jan. 6) when they host 21st ranked Findlay, with the game set to tip at 1 p.m.
