CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated by Division-I opponent Cleveland State University, 79-62 in an exhibition game.
The game started as the teams traded buckets and the Storm took an early 4-2 lead when Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Highland) finished a layup off of an assist by Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South). The Vikings responded and took an 8-4 lead into the first media timeout of the first half. After two minutes of back and forth basketball Cleveland State went on a 6-0 run that saw them take a 24-11 lead which forced a Storm timeout. The Vikings tried to pull away a couple of times but the Storm was able to stay within striking distance with a jumper from Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) and a three pointer by Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence North). The Storm trailed by 16 at the final media timeout of the first half. Late in the first half the Storm went on a 7-0 run that cut the Vikings lead to single digits. The run was highlighted by a Kynard three pointer. Lake Erie entered the half behind, 39-28.
At the intermission the Storm was led by Kynard as he had a team high seven points, two rebounds, and an assist. Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) provided a spark off the bench with a team high four rebounds, and two points in the half.
The Storm was able to cut the Vikings lead to single digits twice behind a pair of three pointers by Howard, before Cleveland State took an 11 point advantage into the first media timeout of the second half. Lake Erie continued their strong play as a quick 5-0 run cut the Cleveland State lead to 47-41 with just under 14 minutes to play. The run was highlighted by a Scott three pointer. The Vikings answered the Storm run and were able to regain a double digit advantage, which forced a Lake Erie timeout. The Vikings finished the game strong and defeated the Storm, 79-62
The Storm was led by Mitch Loomis (Malvern, Ohio / Malvern) as he had a team high 12 points, four rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Scott pitched in with 11 points on 4-7 shooting. Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio / St. Vincent-St. Mary) and Kynard each tallied double digit points with 10 in the game.
Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Monday (Dec. 30) when they travel to take on Cedarville with the match set to tip at 7 p.m.
