SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was in action today as they as they were defeated by Lake Superior State, 84-54.
The Lakers opened the game on a 6-0 run before Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind. / Lawrence North) got the Storm on the board with a three pointer to cut the Lakers lead in half, 6-3. Lake Erie entered the first media timeout of the game behind 11-3. After the media timeout Lake Superior State went on a quick 5-0 run and forced a Storm timeout with just over 13 minutes remaining in the half. Out of the timeout the Lakers got a quick bucket before the Storm answered with back to back layups by Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) and Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) to make the score 17-7 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. After a three minute scoring drought Lake Superior State went on a 7-0 run and took a 17 point lead into the final media timeout of the half. The Storm continued to battle to end the half, but entered the intermission down by 20.
At the half the Storm was led by Howard as he had nine points on 3-5 shooting from behind the arc. Off the bench Mitch Loomis (Malvern, Ohio / Malvern) provided a spark with four points and five rebounds.
The second half started as a back and forth battle as the Lakers took a 23 point advantage into the first media timeout of the second half. After the media timeout the Storm cut the Lakers lead to 17 points numerous times behind strong play from David Dunnigan (Cleveland, Ohio / Padua) but the Lakers were able to take a 20 point lead at the half way point of the second half. Lake Erie continued to battle but were unable to make a run and fell, 84-54.
The Storm was led by Howard as he had a team high 14 points on 4-7 shooting from behind the arc. Ennis Thomas (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville South) and Dunnigan each pitched in with seven points off the bench with Thomas also grabbing four rebounds.
Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Saturday (Dec. 17) when they travel to take on Northwood with the game set to tip at 7 p.m.
