PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Freshman Riley Thomas (Cardington, Ohio/Cardington-Lincoln) scored a team-high 20 points and junior newcomer Brandon Smith (Bedford, Ohio/Bedford/Cuyahoga C.C.) added 17, but Scott Laws scored a game-high 28 to lead host McMaster University to an 87-78 exhibition win over the Lake Erie College men's basketball team "north of the border" in Hamilton, Ont., on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17).
The game wrapped up Lake Erie's four-day two-game international exhibition tour.
The Storm held the Marauders to 36.7 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers in the game, but struggled offensively in their second preseason contest. Even with Riley connecting on six-of-11 shots, including three-of-four from three-point range, Lake Erie went just 21-of-68 (31.6%) from the field and was outrebounded 49-38.
Playing under Canadian college rules with four quarters of play against a team playing its fifth game of the preseason, the Storm led 27-21 after the opening period, but scored just 11 points in the second quarter and trailed by three, 41-38, at halftime.
McMaster pulled ahead in the second half, mostly behind their shooting at the foul line. The Marauders made 24-of-32 from the stripe in the third and fourth quarters.
In addition to Riley and Smith, three others hit double figures. Senior Antonio Kidd (Cleveland, Ohio/Lakewood), sophomore Garrick Sims (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) and freshman Rich Austin (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) each scored 10 points.
Laws, who hit nine shots from the field and from the foul line, was joined in double figures by Victor Rasor with 18 points, Cam Michaud with 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds, and Jordan Tew, who hit four three's en route to his 15 points.
Lake Erie returns stateside to continue its preseason practice schedule in preparation of the 2010-11 season opener on Sunday, Nov. 14, at home against Wilberforce University.
