PAINESVILLE, Ohio - P.J. Turner's last-second shot doomed the Lake Erie Storm on Monday (Jan. 25) night as the Davis & Elkins College Senators downed Lake Erie, 79-77. The Storm had five players score in double figures for the first time this season and senior forward Darnell Campbell (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) turned in his second straight double-double.
The Storm (6-15) trailed for much of the game, until taking a
two-point lead off a pair of free throw makes by junior guard Ethan
Bradshaw (Cincinnati, Ohio/Harmony Prep) with 2:42 to play.
The Senators (8-6) went on a 7-0 blitz from there to take a
five-point lead, 77-72. Lake Erie rallied back as Campbell
converted a pair of free throws and Bradshaw connected on a
three-pointer with 13 seconds left to tie the game at 77-77.
But Turner came up with the clutch basket in the final second to
fend off the Storm's late rally.
The game was tight for much of the first half, though the Storm
held just one lead (12-11) until late in the second half. The
Senators eventually went up by 10 and took a 36-30 lead into
halftime.
Davis & Elkins carried its lead into the second half behind a
game-high 36 points from Tim Turner - the highest total for an
individual against the Storm this season.
Lake Erie was behind by 10 with just under 13 minutes to play when
Campbell caught fire as he notched 16 of his 18 points in the
second half. The 6-foot-6 swingman scored Lake Erie's next eight
points, including three jumpers and a dunk, cutting the Senators'
lead to four, 61-57.
Junior guard Antonio Kidd (Cleveland, Ohio/Lakewood) followed that
flurry with a three-pointer to cut the lead to one. After the teams
traded baskets, freshman center Garrick Sims' (Barberton,
Ohio/Barbeton) layup with 3:43 left tied the game at 66.
After a Tim Turner layup and free throw by Sims, Kidd buried
another three-pointer to give the Storm that 72-70. From there, the
Senators out-scored the Storm, 9-2, for the win.
Kidd tallied 18 points for the Storm and Campbell turned in his
third double-double of the season adding a season-high 12 rebounds
to his 18 points. Bradshaw scored 15 and Sims and freshman forward
Eric Worthey (South Euclid, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy)
each added a dozen points.
The Storm got just two points from its bench on a night in which
the starters all totaled at least 26 minutes.
Tim Turner was outstanding for the Senators, knocking down 9-of-15
threes and 12-of-23 shots overall. Lake Erie out-shot (44 percent
to 41 percent) and out-rebounded Davis & Elkins (54-34), but
the Storm forced just seven turnovers and was out-scored from the
three-point line 33-18.
The Storm is winless on the road since a win at Gannon in late
November. Lake Erie has dropped four tight road games since then,
including three two-point losses (two to ranked teams).
Lake Erie returns home on Saturday for its first home game since
Jan. 4 on Saturday (Jan. 30) when the Storm will play host to the
Ohio Dominican Panthers at 4 p.m. The game follows the women's game
against the Panthers. It will be the Winter White Out at the Jerome
T. Osborne Center with the first 50 students at the games receiving
a free t-shirt.
